When do I need 800xA OPC Client Connection?
System: 800xA 5.1
In my test system I have single AS/CS server. On this server three OPC servers are available:
- AfwOPCDASurrogate Class
- AfwPOCDAServer Class
- OPC DA Server for Control Network.
Last one is AC800M OPC server. Using it, I can see all of controller resources.
Do I need license 800xA OPC Client Connection for connection to OPC DA Server for Control Network (AC800M OPC server) or this license is used only for first/second servers AfwOPCDAxxx?

The License for OPC Client Connection enables third party OPC clients to connect to 800xA via the 800xA OPC server.One license per external access needed.

For System internal communication between controller and operator station of 800xA there is no seperate OPC license. This is included in the core license and in the controller licenses of 800xA. To provide information from 800xA to 3rd party systems, where 800xA is a OPC server to a 3rd party OPC client, you need the OPC client connection license.

Hello Eugene, the OPC client connection license in 800xA is only needed when 800xA is a OPC server to a 3rd party client such as 3rd party historian package or others. If you would like to connect 3rd party PLC to 800xA, you need a OPC server for this PLC which you usually get from the vendor of the PLC or 3rd party vendor and they might charge for the license. In 800xA you can connect to this OPC server on an item by item basis without the need of an additional license. This is good if you just have a few signals to show. Better solution is to use PLC Connect option in 800xA which requires a license. With 800xA PLC Connect you can have tagobjects for 3rd party PLC's with faceplates, trends, alram list etc almost the same as for AC 800M.
