Timeout while updating the I/O data at program start

Very new to PLCs, using a PM583. I am following this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIUFx0tG0Hk, except changed the digital IO module to the one I have: DC523.

I am trying to build a very simple test project with a PM583 connected to DC523. I want one of the outputs to simply follow one of the inputs.

When I login to the PM583 and hit "run", I get an error "I/O-Bus Timeout while updating the I/O data at program start."

Not sure what to do here. I tried clearing the error, but it just comes back the next time I hit "run". Another related question I have: Do I provide 24V into the 1.0,1.1,1.2, etc terminal ports, or does 24V appear on those ports as an output? Datasheet was not very clear "Sensor supply 24 V DC". Also, none of the LEDs on the DC523 are lighting up as they appear in the datasheet.

are you using Control Buider or Automation Builder?
In both cases, in the help of Automation builder if you write DC523, you'll find the connection instructions.
The power supply + 24 V must be connected to terminals marked UP while the zero to V ZP terminals.
It is evident that without power, you can not see any input / output switched on the board.
IMHO the tutorials on the internet can help you to understand but you need to start from the simplest, without neglecting the basic instructions on the proper hardware connection.

Hope this help you

Thank you very much this was very helpful. You are correct in that I didn't attempt to search for "DC523" in Automation Builder help dialog. I did not realize there was hardware instructions in this dialog. Thanks!
