Hi

Yes you can use 255.255.255.0. The fundamental is If other subnet mask than 255.255.240.0 are used, make sure that they are contiguous. The equivalent bit pattern must start and then continue with 1 value. It may change to zero once and must then end with zeroes.

But, following should be takne care:-

- To permit time synchronization, all stations must be in the same subnet.

- When using redundant AC 800F process stations, the subnet mask 255.255.240.0 must be used

- System time synchronization only occurs if the clock time has been set at least once by the engineering station using Options > Set System TIme in Commissioning mode.

I think you mean for the Ethernet ports involved with the redundancy link only?

Yes, you are right. There was an update in the manuals for Freelance 2016 that describes it.
