ACS880 trip

Dear Gentlemen,

We recently installed new drives (ACS880) in our Hot strip mill. the controller of the drive is AC800M. The master controller is AC450. Our issue here that all drives trips without material in the mill and is giving this alarm AFE2 Emergency stop (off1 or off3).

Action taken: to reset this alarm from the MMI whenever it come.

I have consulted the vendor and they say there is an issue with the communication.

Can you please advice or suggest any possible solution.

Regards,

It is not clear from your description how the drives are configured.

AFE2 alarms means that the drive receives Emergency stop command, it is not generated from the drive itself. From the manual:

The emergency stop signal is connected to the input selected by parameter 21.05 Emergency stop source. The mode of the emergency stop is selected by parameter 21.04 Emergency stop mode. An emergency stop can also be generated through a fieldbus (parameter 06.01 Main control word, bits 0…2)

Check how the emergency stop command is configured for your drives - parameter 21.05.

In case it is trough fieldbus, check bits 0 to 2 from main control word

My guess is ... If its a hot strip mill its typically a sectional drive application, where the AC800M is responsible for coordinating the setpoints between all the drive sections and handling all of the operator interface, diagnostics, interlocking etc. The AC450 probably isn't involved much at all (if any)

My very strong advice is, you can of course look at the drive settings but DO NOT CHANGE THE ACS800 DRIVE PARAMETERS. These drives are configured to be controlled pretty much entirely by the AC800M.

"Off1" and "Off3" are bits 1 and 3 of the control word and should be held "ON" for the drive to run (as well as "Off2"). A comms failure between the AC800M and the drive would likely see these bits "lost" or set to zero.

Without a detailed understanding of your drives configuration and control software, it's pretty much impossible to say what is wrong in your plant. Talk to your vendor.

Hi!

It's not mentioned how your drives are connected to your controller?

Beware if you changed drives from the ACS600/800-series, there are differences in how the status- and/or control words are mapped. Check the ACS880 manuals for more info.

Good luck!
