ACS880 Serial Connection and Wiring

We have a new laptop (Acer TravelMate P259-M) running Windows 7 that cannot be setup with the correct drivers for Drive Compeser Pro to connect. US ABB Support has tried what they can but nothing has helped.

So we are looking to use either serial or ethernet to connect for comissioning / programming. I saw a previous question that appears to indicate this is posible. I also see a note in the Drive Composer manual stating " If the drive is used without an Assistant control panel or with a Basic control panel, use separate USB/485 adapter to establish connection between Drive composer and drive."

If anyone can provide information on these possibilities please do.

Regards, Aaron

Hi Aaron

this issue is very strange, in my Dell Latitude laptop with W7 I can use without problem both Drive Composer and Drive Composer Pro.

In ACS880 series, the control panel it works as an adapter between drive and USB port of PC.

If you not use the control panel, I'm not sure that one "general" converter USB/485 can solve the problem. First, because the pinout of the connector drive side is not know.

I have notice that exist one dedicated converter made by ABB type USB/485, where the electronic device to convert USB to 485 is inside the USB connector. Unfortunately at the moment I not have code for this unit.

Have you tested it with FENA-11 module?

Thanks for responding.

We do not use the FEN-11 module so I cannot test.

Yes my old Dell works fine as do all other computers we have! Its maddening that this new Acer will not work. Obviously I suspect the OEM USB drivers. Its using Intel USB 3 controler. Very frustrating.

You mentioned that XETH worked in Drive Composer in an 880 in this question, can I just use that method?  http://www402.abbext.com/m/Ethernet-port-BCU-ACS880-q3912511.aspx

Yes, if you have in your drive the BCU control board, you can use this port to connect drive to pc. It's necessary to enable the Drive Composer Pro at the opening, to use the Eth port. I have, however, never used this communication method.
