800xA General Properties

In 800xA, General Property aspect, I have changed the value of a String in Object type structure. (Aspect has Auto-instantiate key).

But this changed value is reflecting in the new instances whtever im configuring.

But it is not doing any change to the already existing instances.

But i want to change the value of string configured in General properties to all the instances. How to achieve this?

Please guide

Auto-Instantiate is difficult to fathom.

Instances will track type as long as they remain untouched. As soon as an instance is changed, the bond with the type is broken for good (unless you revert the change, eg by importing a backup).

Put simply, you cannot use Auto-Instantiate to keep instances forever updated with the type if you plan to update the instances.

Also, remember that General Properties are no good solution to store a frequently changed value. Each change of a GP encompasses an Aspect Directory transaction that need to be accepted by a majority of the aspect servers, in fact all that are online. The Aspect Directory was not built to keep up with that type of work.

For frequently changing data, use SoftPoints.

If you seek methods to allow Auto-Instantiate for inheriting something you later can change and still expect type changes to be reflected, code must change. Speak to your regional ABB sales representative about enhancement requests.

Hello Stefan,
Thanks for your answer.
But I'm working for development of 800xA Extension libraries. In this case, customer requires default text value of "string" in General property (linked to PG2 display) to be changed.
So when I do the change in my library by changing the String of General property, it is not getting instantiated to existing instances.
Can I take your point as limitation with General Property?

"Wings won't make a pig fly".

Once you modify something that is Auto-Instantiated, it will no longer track changes (or even delete!) on the type.

I'm not completely happy with Auto-Instantiate either. There are more negative effects of using it as well (try searching AKS to read more about what can happen when you try to delete a modified Auto-Instantiated aspect).

Speak to your sales representative about enhancement requests or even customer funded development.
